1 SYSTEM OVERVIEW 1.1

Overview

The Kingframe Steel Framing System (SFS) is a component supply structural stud façade system commonly used in two main methods: Infill and Oversail. The system consists of C shaped studs and U shaped tracks designed on a project specific basis to form the inner leaf of an external façade. Both systems are constructed on-site and must be designed and installed to relevant codes and standards. Liability for the quality and accuracy of the installation rests with the installation contractor and not Kingspan Steel Building Solutions. SFS has been extensively used in construction projects covering residential flats, apartments, healthcare and educational developments, commercial developments, public buildings and industrial properties. Sections are supplied to site as individual components and fully assembled in-situ. This is an advantage where site access/craneage is restricted. Components can be supplied in final required lengths or standard lengths cut to suit on site. By cutting to length on site, construction tolerances in structures can be fully accommodated. 

Infill Systems are typically supported at the slab edge between hot-rolled steel or concrete. This allows insulation and external finishes to be installed outside the main structural frame if the correct tolerance scheme is adopted. The system is suitable for both low and high-rise construction. A deflection allowance is required at each floor level. Oversail Systems are fitted outside the line of the structural frame using support cleats at each floor level with connections designed to allow slab deflection. It is particularly suited to situations where cladding materials are sensitive to differing movement of the main frame. Adequate base support must be provided to accommodate vertical loading.

Both systems achieve early weather protection of the building allowing other internal fitting trades to work inside the structure and removing external cladding from the critical path. Furthermore, these systems also provide lateral support to most cladding materials including masonry, profiled metal sheets, proprietary panels, insulated render systems, terracotta and timber rain screen systems. It should be noted that SFS is not intended to provide vertical support for masonry facades. It is also possible to design Kingspan SFS sections to form the primary load bearing structural framing

for low rise buildings. This is beyond the scope of this manual but information is available on request from Kingspan.

1.2

Design Considerations

Design considerations affect the performance of the SFS systems. Some of these are described below; Design Life SFS sections are hot dip galvanised with a 20μm zinc coating and are intended for warm frame construction. This is to say that the SFS is always fully enclosed within the warm envelope of the facade by insulation applied to the external face of the SFS. Where parapets, upstands, downstands, etc. are formed in SFS, they should be insulated to all exposed faces in order to satisfy this requirement. Assuming that the SFS is maintained within a warm 1 frame environment, current industry guidance is that a design life of 250 years can be expected. Where the SFS is installed in a cold frame environment (low risk of water ingress, some risk of condensation), this reduces to 50-60 years. SFS may be used in potentially corrosive environments, such as swimming pool buildings, providing that the internal finishes are designed to protect the frame. There are a number of boards specifically designed for swimming pools, such as 2 Promat Masterboard which is a moisture resistant lining system for swimming pool applications. Live Load Deflection Every structure, whether concrete or steel, will move when placed under load during normal use. This is anticipated within the design of the building by the engineers and must be accommodated within the SFS system. This movement is in the vertical plane and is normally at its maximum displacement at mid-span between vertical supports e.g. columns. The expected total movement can be 3 calculated by using the formula below ; Maximum deflection = Span between supporting columns ÷ 360 The Kingspan Steel Building Solutions standard SFS System can achieve a maximum deflection tolerance at the head of an infill frame of 25mm. Conditions that have a greater live load deflection value must be referred to Kingspan Steel Building 1

P262 Durability of Light Steel Framing in Residential Building. Second Edition. The Steel Construction Institute, 2009 2 This is provided as an example of available boarding only and does not form a specification or recommendation from Kingspan. Frame linings are beyond the scope of Kingspan’s design and supply. 3 Assumes a design deflection limit under imposed load of span/360 for the primary frame. This should be confirmed with the primary frame engineer 1

Solutions technical department. In oversail framing, the deflection tolerance is generally accommodated within the supporting bracketry and is therefore not limited by the SFS. Building Regulation Requirements The installer should refer to the main contractor and the architect to ensure that the requirements under Building Regulations for areas such as air tightness, fire resistance, thermal bridging and acoustic protection are met before construction begins. When clad in suitable materials and linings, SFS constructions can achieve performances in excess to those required by the current regulations. As the performance is governed by the cladding and linings designed and supplied by others, Kingspan Steel Building Solutions cannot provide specific guidance in these areas. If you require further guidance, please consider use of our “full through wall system” - KingBuild System (KBS).

1.3

Design Guidance

Kingspan Steel Building Solutions offer guidance on specific issues that affect the design, specification and installation of the SFS system. Detailed guidance on issues can be found at: http://www.kingspanpanels.co.uk/sbs. Guidance notes published by Kingspan Steel Building Solutions are recommendations and cover the following main areas; SFS & Setting Out; SFS & Sustainability; SFS & Thermal Performance, SFS & Deflection; SFS & Wind Loadings.

1.4

Construction Design Management

The Construction Design Management (CDM) regulations 2007 redefined the responsibilities and guidance for system suppliers and designers on all construction projects in the UK. Wherever possible, Kingspan Steel Building Solutions will take measures to design out any risk to the installer during construction of the SFS. Kingspan Steel

Building Solutions will identify potential CDM risks to the named individual within the project team. It is the responsibility of the Installer to provide the contact details of this individual to Kingspan Steel Building Solutions. When Kingspan Steel Building Solutions recognises a hazard to health and safety that cannot be avoided through design, the hazard and proposed mitigation is identified on the drawings using the following symbol:

Figure 1 - CDM Hazard Identification

A description of the hazard is then written into the legend of the drawings. The most frequently identified specific risks are:  Multiple different stud systems / gauges specified on drawing – installer to implement sufficient QA checks to ensure compliance with scheme. Consider requesting Kingspan site inspection.  Long span studs – installer to prepare adequate method statement for handling of high span studs. Consider mechanical lifting equipment.  Heavy lifting – installer to prepare adequate method statement for handling heavy materials. Consider mechanical lifting equipment.  Large structural openings – lintels, cills and jambs must be formed with continuous (NOT spliced) members. Installer to ensure specific section lengths ordered as required.  Edge protection required – SFS cill too low to offer edge protection to BS EN 13374:2004. Main contractor to provide additional edge protection system. For further information, please refer to the SFS Designer’s Risk Assessment and the SFS Installation Manual.

Span Tables

The following span tables show the maximum span for each stud section under different applied windloads, effective lengths and span deflection ratios. When using the tables please take into consideration the following notes:  The values shown in each table are the maximum spans in metres of each stud section.  The section properties used to form the tables are in accordance with BS5950: Part 5:1998. Design is based on SCI assessed methodology (SCI Assessed Report RT1439 April 2012).  The span tables apply to SFS Infill sections only. They do not apply for oversail or load bearing sections.  Spans are not limited by the end conditions and therefore these must be checked separately. Spans in bold and italic highlight spans to which the standard stud/track end condition must be checked.  Wind loads are assumed to be uniformly distributed loads only.  No allowance has been made for barrier loading or any other additional imposed load.  Span tables do not consider the axial capacity of the stud sections.  Allowable deflection ratios depend on the type of finishes being applied to the SFS. For further advice seek specialist manufacturer’s guidance.  If in doubt on how to apply these tables, please seek advice from Kingspan Steel Building Solutions.  Span tables are to be used for guidance only. Kingspan accepts no liability for the use of its published span tables on live schemes. Schemes should be referred to Kingspan for design and engineering calculations (at agreed costs) prior to material purchase in all instances.

3 SFS STANDARD FIXINGS 3.1

Recommended Fixings

Kingspan Steel Building Solutions do not sell fixings associated with SFS. Set out below are standard SFS fixings from a variety of manufacturers. All fixings stated are general recommendations only. All connections from the SFS to any interfacing structure or material must be checked for suitability and design with Kingspan Steel Building Solutions and the third party supplier prior to construction. Installers may also wish to use other fixings – this should be communicated to Kingspan at the start of the project (prior to design commencing) such that they can be checked for suitability and incorporated into the design. Note: Kingspan do not recommend the use of PH3 fixings for flush cold rolled to cold rolled connections Application

INFILL SFS

Figure 2 - Typical Infill SFS Bay

4.1

Design Principles

4.1.1 General Stud Design & Construction Studs are generally provided vertically at centres of 600mm,though may be provided at 400mm or 300mm as determined by structural calculation. These centres are determined by interfacing board dimensions of 2400x1200mm (external or internal board). The frames are constructed using a head and base track into which vertical studs are placed. Deflection is typically accommodated at the head connection of the vertical studs to the head track. A corresponding deflection gap in the cladding is normally also needed. 4.1.2 Structural Openings The forming of structural openings is easily managed with the Infill SFS System. Constructions of lintels, cills and jambs must always be confirmed by Kingspan Steel Building Solutions engineers. Details given in Section 6 show construction method only and do not form a specification. 4.1.3 Splicing of Sections Infill sections should be ordered to length or to be cut down on site. Under no circ*mstances should they be spliced together. 4.1.4 Deflection Head Details Deflection zones must be kept clear of all fixings and materials that may compromise the movement joint provided at the head of the SFS. Kingspan Steel Building Solutions Technical will defer to Type 4 deflection method in all instances where a fixing can be practically made on both sides of the SFS wall. Each method has implications on design and they should not be interchanged on site without prior agreement with Kingspan Steel Building Solutions. Further details on all methods are available in the standard details. 

Type 1 – Deflection Head Clip (Detail A14) The deflection head clip system works using a shaped bracket that fits inside the legs of the track that holds the stud in place, providing clearance for the track to move without fouling on the top of the stud or on any fixings. This method only applies to the 70, 100, 150, 200, 250 and 300mm ranges. Type 2 – Block and Bracing (Detail A15) There may be areas of the build where it is not possible to access both flanges of the head track. Below the obstruction, the studs will receive flat strap fixed on either side with a noggin section tightly fitted and fixed between every third stud and at both ends of each bay. When the noggin is fitted the studs will remain solidly in place, unable to twist due to the blocking section.

20

Type 3 – Head Track Blocking (Detail A16) An installer may choose a third method of creating an allowance for deflection, by placing blocking sections of stud within the top track, tightly fitting between every stud. This will prevent the studs from racking or twisting and allow the track to move freely over the studs. Type 4 – Slotted Stud (Detail A21) The Slotted Stud system works using a centrally positioned pre-punched slot in the flange of the ‘C’ profile. The stud is secured using fixings installed through both flanges of the head track through the slots in the stud. This allows for relative deflection of the head track whilst still providing restraint for the studs.

When using the slotted stud, the installer should be aware of the following:  When placing orders for slotted studs, the order must clearly state that slotted studs are required. This is the responsibility of the installer.  Kingspan have a minimum rolling length of 600mm for each section. Therefore, cripple studs beneath this length do not require slots and can be fixed to the lintel only as shown in Figure 3 below:

Figure 3 – Slotted stud cripple studs for spans below 600mm

4.1.5 Mid Span Restraint (Detail 0) Mid span restraint may be specified by Kingspan Steel Building Solutions engineers in instances of high vertical spans or of high load. Their purpose is to restrain the studs from twisting. 4.1.6 Cladding Treatments & Boarding The performance of the SFS when subject to loads from cladding treatments is taken into account by Kingspan Steel Building Solutions engineers. Specialist cladding treatments may require different structural schemes based on the loading arrangements or system requirements of these systems. Unless otherwise instructed, Kingspan Steel Building Solutions engineers will assume that all loads are uniformly distributed across a given panel. 4.1.6.1 Masonry cladding SFS can provide lateral support to masonry cladding (i.e. restraint from wind loads) but it must never be used to support brick or other such heavy-weight cladding. It is the responsibility of the primary structural engineer on the project to ensure that adequate support for such cladding types is provided. rd

4.1.7 2/3 Minimum Bearing rd As a general rule, the head and base tracks of any SFS frame must be supported by a minimum of 2/3 the width of the track by a primary structural element (concrete or hot rolled steel). In instances at the head of a frame where this bearing is not available, ‘Z’ bars may be used as shown in Detail Error! Reference source ot found. and B.06s. At the base of a frame, Detail 0 may be used. All conditions must be checked with a Kingspan Steel Building Solutions engineer prior to construction.

21

4.1.8 Service Holes Holes may be required in SFS members to allow cabling or pipework to pass within the wall zone. SCI Publication 301 – Light Steel Framing in Residential Construction (Section 9) gives an approximate guide to the maximum sizes and spacing of service penetrations in light gauge steel sections without compromising the structural integrity. The following rules should be followed when drilling holes within SFS sections.

No holes outside of these rules should be created in SFS members without the prior agreement of Kingspan Steel Building Solutions technical team. 4.1.9 Curved Walling SFS can readily accommodate curved walling using a variety of construction details as outlined later in this document. It must be noted though that SFS cannot form curved windows without additional curved hot rolled restraint/support. SFS can be facetted around the window but will usually require restraint posts at each facet location. For further guidance, please contact Kingspan Steel Building Solutions technical team.

22

4.1.10 Braced Bays Where structural bracing fouls the zone of the SFS, alternative detailing must be provided. There are several ways to accomplish this, each of which requires coordination with the design engineer and fabricator:  Use of SHS or RHS bracing instead of flats allows SFS to be fitted above and below.  Flat strap bracing can be detailed offset to the external or internal face, allowing SFS to span unimpeded in the remaining zone. This must be confirmed with the engineer/fabricator as it will result in eccentric loads applied to the columns.  If neither of the above are possible, twin 70mm systems may be able to span either side of the bracing and be tied together at regular vertical centres if required by design.

Figure 5 - SHS Bracing

Figure 6 - Off-set bracing

Figure 7 - Twin system around bracing

For specific guidance, please contact Kingspan Steel Building Solutions. 4.1.11 Parapets and Downstands Parapets and downstands can be formed in SFS but designers should be aware that SFS is a vertically spanning product which requires restraint at head and base. This can be by use of hot rolled restraint posts at regular centres with an SFS section spanning horizontally between them (as details 0 & 0), by use of buttressing walls or by use of diagonal propping/bracing back into the structure. 4.1.12 Ribbon Windows Ribbon windows and large punch windows may be formed in SFS in a variety of ways:  The windows may include blanking panels, behind which SFS can span full height to break up the opening into manageable widths. The maximum centres for such panels will be project specific and Kingspan Steel Building Solutions should be consulted for guidance on each job.  The project engineer may provide wind posts at certain centres to break up the spans of large lintels and cills into manageable widths. For guidance on post centres, please contact Kingspan Steel Building Solutions.  The SFS section depth (i.e. overall wall depth) may be increased to allow it to span further without additional restraints. In this way, it may be possible to span SFS between primary structural columns.  The openings may be framed out in hot rolled steel by others. 4.1.13 Brise Soleil It is possible for SFS to support a brise soleil in certain situations. This will depend upon the spans and applied loads but the following guidance will need to be observed:  The brise soleil bracketry must be fixed back to the webs of the studs designed to support it – not the flange.  Kingspan will require a full schedule of the loads applied by the brise soleil in order to design the SFS to support it. Generally, this will include snow, wind and dead loads.  The SFS will require strengthening in order to support the screens and none should be installed without prior agreement with Kingspan Steel Building Solutions technical team.  Potential cold bridging issues will need to be assessed by the architect / design team.

23

4.1.14 Kingposts The KingPOST is a wind moment post designed and supplied by Kingspan Steel Building Solutions. The KingPOST is an alternative for bespoke hot rolled steel posts and is used to provide restraint to the SFS system on applications such as large spanning windows or parapets. It offers a standard off the shelf solution that can be used to form a range of cantilevers. The base is a standard assembly to which light gauge steel studs can be fixed to form the final arrangement.

Further details on Kingposts can be found on Kingspan Technical Application Document: Kingpost Installation (TAD 00057) and standard details C.18a and C.19a

4.1.15 Oversail Cleats Kingspan Steel Building Solutions have developed a range of standard oversail cleats as an alternative for bespoke lateral or dead load cleats. The cleats can be used to fix the SFS studs back to the primary structure at intermediate positions to provide lateral and dead restraint. It offers a standard off the shelf solution that can be ordered in a range of depths and leg lengths to suit. The SFS Oversail cleats will be designed and supplied by Kingspan Steel Building Solutions. The SFS oversail cleats are suitable for general studs and jamb studs, but bespoke cleats may be required for non-standard applications.

Design Principles

5.1.1 General Stud Design & Construction Studs are generally provided vertically at centres of 600mm, 400mm or 300mm. These centres are determined by interfacing board dimensions of 2400x1200mm (external or internal board). The SFS is set outside the line of the primary structure and fixed back to steel beams and/or concrete slabs using specifically designed brackets. Due to the varying nature of setting out, all brackets are designed on a project specific basis. Brackets or ledger angles may require fitting to the slab edge onto which either horizontal track or vertical studs can be fitted. Each stud requires individually setting out by design to ascertain the right position for the support brackets. This construction method is limited as to the amount of stories it can form before being dead load fixed back to the slab. For project specific guidance, please contact Kingspan Steel Building Solutions. 5.1.2 Deflection Conditions The provision for deflection within an oversail system is within the bracket fixed to the studs. The face of the bracket that fits to the stud will be slotted and the face of the bracket that goes to the substrate will be hard fixed. This will allow the structure to deflect independently of the SFS.

25

5.1.3 Splicing of Sections Studs should be spliced into manageable lengths to facilitate safe site installation and to guarantee adequate structural performance. These splices are individually designed to ensure that they are strong enough for each application but will generally be just above restraint points. No splices should be added where not indicated by the design. If additional cuts are required in order to safely install the system, please contact Kingspan Steel Building Solutions prior to ordering the steel. 5.1.4 Structural Openings Structural openings are formed in the same manner as the Infill method. However, due to increased loading conditions at jambs, lintels and cills, the support bracketry to these elements may require heavier gauges and increased fixing capacities. Where openings do not align floor on floor, it may be impractical to use traditional oversail SFS. In these instances, single storey ‘overfills’ may be formed outside the line of the building using bespoke bracketry as shown in detail 0. 5.1.5 Mid Span Restraint (Detail 0) Mid span restraint is often used in Oversail façades to help stiffen the panel construction. The use of mid span restraints will be determined under structural calculation and shown on the Kingspan Steel Building Solutions elevation drawings. The specification and setting out of these noggins will be given in Kingspan Steel Building Solutions drawings. 5.1.6 Cladding Treatments & Boarding (Detail E.01 & E.02) Please refer to guidance in section 4.1. 5.1.7 Service Holes Please refer to guidance in section 4.1. 5.1.8 Curved Walling Please refer to guidance in section 4.1. 5.1.9 Braced Bays Please refer to guidance in section 4.1. 5.1.10 Parapets and Downstands In many instances, parapets and downstands are more easily formable in an oversail system as the studs can be cantilevered from the floor above/below. This depends upon the spans and loads involved and should be referred to Kingspan Steel Building Solutions for specific guidance. 5.1.11 Ribbon Windows Please refer to guidance in section 4.1. 5.1.12 Brise Soleil Please refer to guidance in section 4.1. 5.1.13 Fixings The correct and adequate fixing of brackets to the primary structure must be specified by Kingspan Steel Building Solutions engineers. Generally, bracket fixing to concrete take the form of either mechanical or resin anchors and fixings to hot rolled steel will be grade 8.8 structural bolts.

KINGSPAN STEEL BUILDING SOLUTIONS

7 CLADDING TREATMENTS 7.1

Introduction

The typical cladding build-ups shown in this section are for guidance only. The project architect or cladding contractor is to maintain responsibility for the overall performance of the wall and their detailing should be deferred to in all instances.

7.2

7.3

Insulated Render

Lightweight insulated render systems can be fully supported by the SFS. There are generally two types of system which vary in their detail and application between manufacturers; direct applied & cavity systems. Direct Applied Systems When the render build up is applied either adhesively or mechanically to the SFS, there are no special requirements to consider. A typical wall build up is given below;

Masonry

Typical Wall Build Up SFS design with masonry outer leaf cladding is generally formed as shown below;

All masonry must be dead loaded to a suitable support (slab edge angle or ground slab) as the SFS is designed to withstand horizontal loads only in this case.

Cavity Systems Where a drainage/ventilation cavity is required, the cavity is usually placed between the sheathing board and the insulation by use of vertical top hat spacers. Further guidance should be sought from the render system manufacturer.

Brick Tie Studs All fixings of brick tie channels are to be fixed back to the SFS through the insulation. In instances around structural openings, an additional stud is provided at a nominal 150mm from the line of the opening to accept the channel as Detail F.01.

115

7.6 7.4

Terracotta tile systems may be supported from an SFS system. The dead weight and loadings of the chosen system must be communicated to Kingspan Steel Building Solutions engineers to check the adequacy of a given stud arrangement. There are typically two main types of support to a tile based system; horizontal and vertical systems. Horizontal Systems Where the interfacing rails for the terracotta are fixed horizontally to the SFS, the load is evenly distributed across the frame. This requires no special constructions within the SFS. Vertical Systems Where the cladding rails span vertically, there is may either be a sub-system of horizontally spanning rails to distribute the loads in the SFS or the brackets may be directly fixed back to the SFS. In the latter case, there may be specific setting out requirements for the SFS in order to guarantee studs in the desired locations. These need to be specifically identified to Kingspan Steel Building Solutions prior to design.

7.5

Metal Rainscreen

Terracotta Rainscreen

Timber Rainscreen

Timber rainscreen systems can be directly applied to an SFS system and requires no special constructions. Horizontal timber battens are laid directly onto the SFS or the carrier board with vertical timbers creating a lattice frame for the finished boards to be fixed into.

Lightweight metal rainscreen systems may be supported from an SFS system. There are typically two main types of support to a tile based system; horizontal support and vertical systems. Horizontal Systems Where the interfacing rails for the rainscreen are fixed horizontally to the SFS, the load is evenly distributed across the frame.

7.7

Stone Panels

Stone panels must be dead loaded to a suitable element to transfer all dead weight into the primary structure. The SFS is designed to withstand horizontal forces only in this situation. The setting out and direction of span of the stone is critical to the performance of the SFS and must be reviewed by Kingspan Steel Building Solutions engineers.

PRODUCTS: Steel Framing System

‘U’ Track and ‘C’ Stud cold formed steel galvanised profiles

SUPPLIER: Kingspan Steel Building Solutions, Pleck Road, Walsall, WS2 9ES Tel; +44 (0) 1944 712 000 www.kingspanprofiles.com

Products Cold rolled components are manufactured from pre-hot dipped galvanised steel, Z275 coating, guaranteed yield strength 390 N/mm². All studs, joists, tracks and accessories shall be of a type, size, gauge and spacing determined by structural calculation and as shown on the drawings, and shall be supplied by Kingspan Steel Building Solutions. Unless stated otherwise in the calculations, all structural members are designed in accordance with UK codes of practice. Procurement It is the installer’s responsibility to produce a cutting list and order Kingspan Steel Building Solutions materials. This should be co-ordinated to suit the desired construction programme. Drawing Approval All drawings must be approved by the main contract Engineer and project Architect prior to construction works. Erection of Components All systems are constructed on-site and must be installed to British Standard BS5950, BS8000 and NSSS (National Structural Steelwork Specification). Liability for the quality and accuracy of the installation rests with the Contractor and not Kingspan Steel Building Solutions. Care must be taken when site cutting components square where they are to be used in right angled connections and all cut edges should be protected. Fixing of components shall be with self-tapping screws or otherwise by design. Screw type and size shall be as typical details or to a project specific design. All screw fixings must be installed perpendicular to the surface wherever possible. All bolt fixings are to be Grade 8.8. No holes are to be cut or formed in Kingspan Steel Building Solutions SFS without prior reference to Kingspan Steel Building Solutions.

Service slots can be provided in studs when requested and if deemed acceptable by Kingspan Steel Building Solutions Design Department. Track members shall be securely anchored to the supporting structure as shown on the drawings. Complete, uniform and level bearing support shall be provided to upper and lower tracks. Abutting lengths of track shall be securely anchored to a common structural element and spliced, all as determined by structural calculations. Studs shall be plumbed, aligned and securely attached/located within upper and lower tracks. Framing of wall openings shall include headers, lintels and supporting studs as shown on the drawings. Temporary bracing shall be provided where required until completion of erection. The erection contractor is responsible for the temporary stability of the structure during construction. External Walls Insulation should be provided over the external face of the stud walling that is sufficiently robust to remain in place during and post construction, and should have adequate thermal resistance to prevent cold bridging and interstitial condensation. Insulation should be fixed in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions. Consideration should be given to joints in insulation boards and the repair of damage to prevent ingress e.g. taping of joints or provision of a breather membrane. Internal linings should be fixed in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and selected to achieve the specified performance for fire, thermal, and acoustic requirements. Where masonry cladding forms the external envelope, it should be tied back to the Kingspan Steel Building Solutions studs using stainless steel wall ties and continuous channels fixed with standoff screws. Additional studs are to be fitted at all jambs to provide support for wall ties.

USE Steel Sections – form internal/external, structural/nonstructural walls, floors and ceilings. They may be supplied partially or fully assembled. TYPICAL COMPOSITION Steel panels are assembled from cold rolled steel sections manufactured from hot dip, zinc-coated / iron zinc coated slit steel coil to BS EN 10143:2006. The profiles are rolled in accordance with the specification for cold rolled steel profiles to BS EN 10162:2003. Cold rolled profiles are manufactured as suitable for use in the specification of galvanised steel stud and track partitions and linings using screw fixed gypsum walling board to BS 7364:1990 or other boards depending on the application. Boards, Fastenings and Fittings may be of various proprietary materials each of which will have its own safety information sheet supplied by the manufacturer. STEEL All steel is hot dip iron zinc galvanised to a coating thickness typically of 275g/m2. HANDLING OF PRODUCT Steel sections are either handled individually or banded into bundles for ease of transportation depending on size, shape and weight. Steel sections are loaded onto transport in a way that enables easier mechanical off-loading. Kingspan provide guidance on handling methods to the contractor as part of the installation training course. Any distortion or damage to the sections must be avoided during handling as this could affect structural integrity. It is important that sufficient space is available for moving sections from the unloading point to any intermediate storage area and/or the final assembly location. Where banded sections require lifting by hoists and cranes then ropes and slings should be used together with a suitable trailing tie to stop uncontrolled swinging. Bundles should never be lifted by their bands. STORAGE OF PRODUCT All steel sections can be stacked either flat or on edge and must be supported along their length and width. A number of recommendations are made: i) All sections should be stored in clean, dry conditions, protected from inclement weather. ii) No sections should be stored next to or in contact with dry cement, lime, plaster or mortar. iii) Full bundles of sections should not be stacked more than two high with each bundle adequately separated by timber batons of equal sizes placed at regular intervals along the length of the pack.

DISPOSAL OF PRODUCT The disposal of steel, panel or other associated waste/scrap must be carried out by an authorised and qualified disposal agent and in any case at a site suitable for the re-cycling of the steel section, or an authorised land fill site. The sharp edges could present a danger and must be kept out of reach. HEALTH HAZARDS, PRECAUTIONS & FIRST AID Steel sections are designed to be structurally sound according to each application and are structurally capable in the assembled designed condition only. The integrity of the assembled panel/module must not be reduced by unauthorised dismantling and/or removal of material whether steel, board or fastenings. Panel/module assemblies are not designed to support any structure other than the finished product so must neither be used, nor relied upon, as supports during storage or assembly. It is the responsibility of all personnel working on or with the panels and modules to support themselves safely and, if necessary, form an independent support system. HEALTH HAZARD – EYE CONTACT Extreme care must be taken when releasing and breaking open bundle strapping. When bundle strapping is cut tension is released, causing the strapping to spring freely from the bundle which can result in eye injury. The use of tools (especially power cutting tools) on steel sections generates potentially hazardous shavings and sparks. Precautions Packs and bundles must be opened whilst on the ground to avoid the possibility of their contents falling over and causing injury. A number of protective measures are also recommended: 1. Safety footwear should be worn. 2. Suitable eye protection should be used (a) when cutting the strapping; (b) when cutting the profile and c) when using tools of any sort. 3. Safety gloves capable of protecting the skin form steel shavings and sharp edges should be worn. 4. Strapping should be restrained from springing freely whilst being cut. First Aid In the event of eye injury, cuts or abrasions, seek immediate medical attention. It is also recommended that if a cut is received requiring medical or first aid attention, professional advice should be attained regarding the possible need for a Tetanus injection.

HEALTH HAZARD – SKIN CONTACT: Lacerations of the skin can occur from sharp corners and edges or when breaking open strapping. Foot injuries could also be sustained when walking over discarded steel debris on site (e.g. re-cut edges of sections). Steel shavings and sparks are produced when using tools (particularly power tools). Precautions: 1. Hand and Power tools – should be used only by those wearing suitable protection. 2. Lifting – recommended techniques must be adhered to and manual lifting should be limited to acceptable weights. Never lift any packs that are not within the method limits. 3. Loading and Unpacking – suitable gloves and protective clothing should be worn. 4. General Handling – persons with skin problems, grazes and those known to be sensitive to mineral oils should

protect hands and exposed skin with a barrier cream or suitable gloves. First Aid: In the event of skin irritation or injury, immediate medical attention must be sought by an appropriately qualified person. HEALTH HAZARD - INHALATION: Steel sections at atmospheric temperatures do not emit any fumes or gasses. PRECAUTIONS: (As stated above). Health Hazard – Ingestion: (not applicable) Health Hazard – Exposure limits: (not applicable) Health Hazard – Fire and Explosion hazards: (not applicable)
